Be The Greatest. Attack Like Rafa

Be The Greatest. Attack Like Rafa

Rafa Nadal is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players ever. He has been ranked #1 in the world for 209 weeks and has won 22 Grand Slams titles. His net worth is estimated to be over $200 million.

Rafa spent the past year out of the game due to injury. Last week, Rafa announced that it is time for him to return to the game when the circuit starts in January in Australia. He lives in Spain, far from Australia, so this isn’t an easy trip. Australia isn’t only 19 hours away by air, it is summer there. Preparation for the Australian Open takes a lot of work.  Having turned pro in 2001, he’s traveled worldwide on the pro circuit for a long time. This means he’s been away from home for 30 to 35 weeks a year since he was 17. He’s coming back with no guarantee of success. He’ll likely lose the last match he plays. So why would he return after a year away with injuries at 37?  He’s not done, so he isn’t choosing the easy route.

Here’s what we can learn from Rafa and his return:

  1. When life is hard ( and it will be), be the person you aspire to be.
  2. When life is hard ( and it will be), lead with integrity.
  3. When life is hard ( and it will be) be dependable, transparent, and honest.
  4. When life is hard ( and it will be) attack with energy.

2024 is sure to bring a lot of uncertainty into my life. I’m going attack like Rafa. I’m grateful for good reminders.

Respectfully,

Rod
