21 Apr Grateful That Sully Dreamed Big

Robert Sullivan and I have been friends for many years. We’ve laughed together, cried together, and shared honest conversations about life. At one point, I even tried to talk him out of going into the restaurant business. Thankfully for both of us, Robert had a vision that not even one of his closest friends could derail. Today, Sully’s Steamers has built something special: delicious food, a memorable brand, and a loyal following. Congratulations to Robert and everyone at Sully’s on their remarkable success.
April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to recognize both the progress made and the work that still lies ahead. Since my son’s diagnosis, resources and understanding have improved significantly, but our community still needs greater support, opportunities, and inclusion. The CDC now reports that autism affects approximately one in thirty-one children. That number is striking, and while many questions remain, one thing is clear: autism impacts more families than ever before.
The challenges can be significant. Families often face emotional, financial, and relational strain as they navigate therapies, education plans, and daily life. Individuals with autism, especially adults, can also encounter barriers to meaningful employment and independence. Even college graduates on the spectrum experience unemployment and underemployment at rates far too high. Robert and our local owner/ operator, Rick, took a chance and bet big by giving my son a job.
That is why awareness must lead to action. We need stronger support systems, more understanding employers, and communities willing to create opportunities for every person to thrive. Autism is not something families should have to navigate alone. With compassion, education, and commitment, we can build a world where individuals with autism and their families are seen, supported, and valued. Every day, I can’t help but think about the restaurant that I tried to talk my friend out of, which has employed my son for nearly two years. I keep learning that I’m not in control. God’s got this and that he has a plan for all of us.
Dream big, bet on someone, and you too, might just become rich beyond measure.
