IT IS NEVER ABOUT THE RAIN

IT IS NEVER ABOUT THE RAIN

One thing is certain: there will be difficult days ahead. When I was young, my father often told me to save for a rainy day. He implied that one thing was guaranteed based on his life experiences: the rain would come, so it was wise to save up and be prepared. But what about the events we can’t plan for? The ones that catch us off guard and hit us hard? We’ve all experienced situations that come out of nowhere and leave us reeling. In hindsight, we realize there was no way we could have prepared for them, regardless of how much we anticipated the rain.

Here’s the important part: it’s not really about the rain; it’s about how we respond. Recently, my dog tore her ACL, which presented a challenge. I can’t afford to dwell on the problem; I must focus on my response, as that truly makes a difference. My dog’s hurt leg isn’t the worst thing ever, but responding correctly to little things builds character for when the big things hit. Therefore, there’s nothing more important than our responses to micro challenges. This is exactly how we build strength and character—practice matters.

Read about the response in Chapter Three of HCF. No Struggle, No Story.
